Are too many children being diagnosed as bipolar who are not?

Below is an interesting excerpt on , I got from the April 19th edition of "The Austrailian".

CHILDREN as young as four are being diagnosed as bipolar in what some medical experts warn is an "epidemic" of over-diagnosis rippling from the US.

Psychiatrist Louise Newman said the US trend for diagnosing "quite young children" was highly controversial but was starting to be repeated in Australia. "I had a child referred to me, who had been diagnosed by someone else with bipolar disorder, who was four," Professor Newman said.

"This child had many other reasons for being emotionally disturbed. No one is questioning the validity of the condition - the question is whether we are calling conditions bipolar disorder that in the past we would have called something else."

Professor Newman said diagnoses in psychiatry tended to "go in and out of favour", and fashion was part of the reason why diagnoses of bipolar disorder had increased.

See a professional.

If you teen or child is taking medication for ADHD, and his hyperactivity is getting worse. Take
your child to a very good psychologist or psychiatrist to see if he/she may have . The medication taken for could be affecting your child. For if your child is bipolar, the medication makes the manic stage worse. Often there is misdiagnosis or your child could be both bipolar and ADHD.

Melancholia and The Creativity Connection

Scientists and Doctors are saying there is truth to the long held notion that people who are depressed are creative people. More so after the depression has lifted somewhat than during the time of serious depression. Here are some links you may enjoy reading.

Is your abusive loved one bipolar?

Many professional who are treating people often fail to diagnose bipolar disorder, by treating the patient merely as an alcholic, or drug addict. Often people have a hard time dealing, when a bipolar phase is active, and resort to alcohol or drugs.

Often when bipolars are on alcohol or drugs, they are abusive both verbally and physically with
those they love. Because they are irritable or paranoid, they become very critical of those around them.

So if you are in an abusive relationship, perhaps your partner is bipolar.
